Chapter Check-In   Fall 2007 Frater

Sigma Chi
Medical University of South Carolina

Sigma Chi started the 2006 school year off with our annual post-gross party, a party Psi Omega sponsors for the freshmen following a gross anatomy exam. It’s a great way to unwind after a grueling exam; Toucan Reef was the venue of choice. This cute little restaurant and bar on the waterway served drinks, appetizers and provided a DJ for our hard-working freshmen colleagues.

The Fishing Tournament was once again a big success. This year we co-hosted the tournament with Delta Sig. The fish on the “menu” were trout, flounder, sheephead, and bonnethead shark; prizes were given for the biggest catch. Afterwards, we followed the tournament up with yet another great afterparty at Salty Mike’s. We raised $900 to be divided up among the three “after hours” free dental clinics in the Charleston area.

In the fall, our Rush activity with the new freshmen class is a annual BBQ, which is always a big hit thanks to “Uncle Doc’s Special BBQ Sauce, a Dr. Rivers’s specialty. We want to thank our new co-deputy councilor, Dr Ted McGill for his help and all of his support this year!! Dr McGill, welcome aboard!!!

What better way to top off a great semester than by hosting the greatest event of all—Casino Night held at Knights of Columbus Hall. This is our most popular event and most successful event of the entire school year. We always start the night off right with appetizers and a cocktail hour. Then, professional dealers provide Blackjack, Craps, and Texas Hold-‘Em during this exciting event. No gambling for money at these tables though. At the end of the night, chips are cashed in for raffle tickets that can be exchanged for some great prizes such as cooking lessons, paintings, and jewelry. And of course, there’s no other way to end a night like this than with music and dancing.

During the spring semester, Sigma Chi focuses mostly on community service. Some of our plans include working with Special Olympics, Give Kids a Smile, and Habitat for Humanity. In addition, we have many members who will be participating in mission trips and volunteering at the free dental clinics that we support financially. We think that 2006 was a great year for Sigma Chi and we have many plans for 2007.

The year 2007 has begun and we are excited to report the addition of nine new members. The induction ceremony took place on January 18th in St. Luke’s chapel located on the MUSC campus. It was a tremendous success complete with an after party at Charleston Beerworks.

As in the past, our members have been actively involved in philanthropic events throughout the semester. This year, the events included Special Olympics/Special Smiles in March, Give Kids a Smile day, and volunteering at local dental clinics. Additionally, many Psi Omega members participated in a mission trip to Ecuador during our spring break. We are excited to continue to “give back” to the community and are planning new and exciting ways to do that. One idea we are hoping to implement this year is to cook dinner for the Ronald McDonald House located very near MUSC.

This year we were successful at our second annual Psi Olympics event held at the end of March. This year the event included a barbeque where all were invited to enjoy each other’s company and the nice weather! The year came to a close with the senior banquet that took place on Wadmalaw Island, SC. It is a great outdoor event including a tasty barbeque, skeet shooting, horseshoes, an award ceremony and just a lot of fun! It was a nice way to honor our seniors and we are extremely sad to see them go.

We are very excited to start planning events for next year. We are looking forward to Post- Gross Anatomy events, the fishing tournament, and rush events. We always enjoy our freshman welcome party and especially Casino Night! We are proud to say that the proceeds from these events are given to free dental clinics in the Charleston area.

Sigma Chi is rearing and ready to start the upcoming 2007-2008 school year. We have great new ideas ready to implement and we hope to continue our philanthropic work and impact on the community this year. We are proud of our service and loyalty and are excited to see what we can accomplish this year. We would especially like to thank Dr. Albenesius, Dr. Rivers, and Dr. McGill for their dedication and excitement about Psi Omega. We are looking forward to another great year!
