| Chapter Check-In | Fall 2007 Frater |
The members of Psi Omega at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry have accomplished a great deal this past winter and spring. We have been representing the Phi Rho chapter with ample amounts of pride through various activities and services within our community. Our chapter began the new year with the annual Stein Party in acknowledgement of the newest 2006-07 members. The venue was held at a popular local pub and many attended even despite the winter weather. This is the time and place where new members feel officially honored as they are given a stein with their name prefixed by the title, “Dr.”! As always this was a refreshing and rewarding way to start the semester. One party led to another. Our annual Casino night was another enjoyable time for members to kick back and have fun before the first big round of exams and clinic deadlines were due. UMKC’s Phi Rho continues to partner with and also to provide support to our neighboring Ronald McDonald House. Their residing families are always appreciative of our time and donations of food. This spring we have supplied them with home cooked meals on several occasions. Our chapter participates in their Pop Tab Collection Program as well by making containers available throughout the school for students, patients, faculty and staff to save the tabs. There’s definitely no shortage of caffeine consumption at the school, especially during finals, so one can imagine how sizeable our profits are for their foundation! We’d love to think that they are all from diet sodas of course, but that’s doubtful. Our newest contribution to the Ronald Mc- Donald house was giving them a portion of the proceeds from a campus wide dodge ball tournament we hosted. The first ever Dodge Ball tournament was held the second Saturday in March at Sweeney Recreation Center on main campus. It pitted 8 teams including several Psi Omega members, other dental students and a team of medical students. Official Dodge Ball Association rules were followed and good times were had by all (except those covered in bruises the next day)! This new event proved to draw the competitiveness out of each player. To say the least, it was an excellent chance to relive those carefree grade school days and to get some relief from these stressful dental school days. Most importantly, it was for a great cause. Spring semester flew quickly and soon enough our seniors were saying goodbye. Phi Rho honored and celebrated our graduates at the always anticipated Senior Send Off party held at our faculty advisor’s home, Dr. Brian Williams. His gorgeous home made it an all around classy and admirable evening. We were pleasured to sum up our thoughts on the year that was coming to a close and to share a few new ideas amongst the up and coming new leaders. The baton was passed as last year’s Psi Omega leaders were commended for their creditable efforts and this year’s rookies stepped up to the plate. We members of the Phi Rho chapter from the University of Missouri Kansas City are enthusiastic about what the 2007-08 year will bring! Looking forward, we expect a successful year of service and smiles to come. Plans are already in the works for innovative community involvement and outreach expansions. Another future focus will be on our Psi Omega rush to come in September. Until then, we hope to plant as many seeds as possible so that we may nurture them and watch them grow!
