| Chapter Check-In | Fall 2007 Frater |
The Gamma Omicron Chapter continues serving all of its members as well as the community we live in. From service projects to social events, our officers and members work very hard to maintain the Psi Omega standards our older colleagues have passed down. We are excited to start another academic year with a combination of classic and fresh ideas. With an amazing set of hard working officers it is our mission to make this year exceptional in every way. With the new nursing school building located just across from the dental school, our chapter is looking forward to hosting a social this summer to enhance the feeling of community on the MCV campus. In August, we will hold our annual Post-Gross party for the new first year students. Our Post-Gross is not only a good icebreaker for the first but also a great chance for Psi O to recruit new members. Some new additions we will be adding to our schedule are a lunch and a bar night for our freshmen and any other potential new members. Also, our new executive committee is looking forward to throwing a New Year’s party to welcome back our members from winter break and get everyone excited for the initiation of our new members later in the semester. In April, we will once again arrange a tailgate for the Strawberry Hill Horse Races, which includes two plots, food, and drinks for members and guests. Lastly, at the end of the year, we are planning a finale for the seniors, one last night out before all the real world responsibilities kick in after graduation. The Gamma Omicron Chapter has always paid particular attention to balancing our social events with service projects. Our blood drives have been very successful in the past and are already scheduled starting early fall and going into spring of 2008. A new addition this year is Habitat for Humanity. Our service chairs are looking to arrange a weekend for our members this fall. Our pediatric outreach efforts will also continue with visits to elementary and middle schools to educate our kids about good oral hygiene and about how the oral cavity affects the entire body. We will also be visiting the children’s ward at MCV Hospital during holiday seasons. Lastly, canned food drives for the food bank and fundraisers to raise money for different charities are being planned throughout the year.

Since our profession emphasizes head and neck cancer screening, we will be assisting our fellow colleagues at the nursing school in providing their patients with similar services as well as healthy oral hygiene for those with chronic medical conditions that place then in a hospital setting for long periods of time. Our chapter for the first time will have a journal club, with officers being responsible for presenting selected articles at monthly meetings. Also, our chapter sponsors several members to attend MCV’s yearly Jamaica project to provide free dental care. All in all, we are starting the year with a very promising lineup of social, service, and academic events. –Written
