The University of Florida’s Gamma Gamma chapter continues to be active and eventful on into the next academic year. Our chapter has continued to grow as our membership increased through successful recruitment and through participation in our vast academic, social, and community events. The Gamma Gamma chapter remains excited and impressed with the levels of interest and dedication that our members demonstrate, and we are excited at the prospect of success that our fraternity will enjoy on into the spring.
The Gamma Gamma chapter prides itself on not only providing social events for our members, but also providing many academic events, giving us the opportunity to enrich our experiences as dental professionals. We have continued to provide our “Lunch ‘n Learns” for our members and always have a few per semester. In July we hosted Colgate representatives who spoke to members about Dentin Hypersensitivity and presented new technology and products to treat the matter. We also tried to broaden our perspective and had the American Board of Forensic Odontology come show us how dentists are pivotal in the judicial and executive branches of government for human identification and bite mark analysis, among other things. We are very happy to be able to bring our members exciting topics to discuss and keep stimulating everyone’s love for the versatility that the dental profession brings.
In order to pursue new Psi Omega members, we hosted our annual “informal” lunch and learn during Rush Week at the end of August. We supplied pizza and a PowerPoint presentation with pictures from past years events to show the incoming freshman and any other interested dental students exactly what Psi Omega is all about. We had each board member present on stage after the presentation to answer questions and encourage students to join. Even though it is very informal, this lunch and learn is most important because each year it helps us attract the majority of our new and returning members and allows us time to focus on filling out applications and collecting dues early!
Perhaps the staple of the Gamma Gamma chapter is our wildly popular tailgates for our national favorite UF Gator football team. We host a tailgate for every Gators home game, and the chapter participation is immense. Every tailgate we have had has resulted in a fun and exciting time for our members. We always provide food, drinks, games and music, free of charge to all of our members. The past spring, we hosted our annual Psi-O-Nara, in which we congratulate and say farewell to our graduating senior members. We hosted the event at a popular restaurant and provided food, drinks, and fun that our seniors are not likely to forget. This celebration of our seniors’ achievements is has proved to be a fun and memorable event for all.
The Gamma Gamma chapter has worked to improve communication through multiple avenues. We have developed a listserv for our members, and are currently compiling a listserv for our huge alumni membership.
