Alpha Chapter - Univeristy of Maryland

The Alpha Chapter kicked off the start of the fall semester with a busy schedule. The year began with various rush events in order to help the new freshman learn what our group was all about. Thanks to the efforts of rush chairs of Ara Stanton (‘06), Breanne Williams (‘06), and Natalie Nguyen (‘06), many active members and many of the new members gathered together for a Happy Hour at the local Camden Pub. After the happy hour ended, the group moved the party over to Camden Yards where they watched the Orioles battle against the Mariners.

Due to the hard work by the rush chairs, the Alpha Chapter gained 31 new members who were inducted on October 28, 2003. The ceremony was held at Davidge Hall and new members as well as their family, friends and present members took part in the service and then stayed for dinner.

The annual BBQ at Deputy Councilor Dr. and Mrs. Seibel’s house was held in September and as always, it was a wonderful time. About 40 members attended and each brought a little something to the meal. Dr. Seibel showed off his “grilling” skills while everyone filled up on the enormous spread of food. We would like to send our “thanks” out to the Seibels for their hospitality!

Once again, this year the chapter was represented and raised money for the Komen 5 Kilometer Walk/Run for the Cure which is a race for Breast Cancer awareness. Carla Guzman (‘06) and Suzie Rizzardi (‘06) organized the group that consisted of four people who ran the race and three who walked. In the end, the group raised about $300 and had a great workout. Way to go guys!

The Alpha Chapter also came together to pull off our successful fall fundraiser, Candy Grams. The “candy grams” are little bags of candy that can be purchased for $1 by student, faculty, etc. for anyone in the school. The bags are then delivered on Halloween. This event required the help of many people to sell, collect, bag and deliver the treats. The night before Halloween, a group of members stayed and enjoyed a potluck dinner as they bagged the candy. This event brought in about $300, half of which was donated to a student charity program, Quest for Care, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

This past Thanksgiving, a group of the members generously donated their holiday to spend their time with people who weren’t as fortunate. A Thanksgiving meal was organized in coordination with the University of Maryland Medical School students at Booker T. Washington Middle School for local families in need. It was a huge success and over 350 people received a hot holiday meal. Along with the meal, the students worked in conjunction to put together a clothing drive. About 20 bags of clothes were donated to the family assistance program.

At the same time, the Alpha Chapter also worked along side the dental hygiene students and organized a Thanksgiving food drive. With the help of the hygiene students, the groups collected over 200 items! These items were then donated to the House of Ruth, a local home for abused and battered women.

As a break from the usual long days at school, Priya Bali (‘05) organized a night of fun and bowling for their fellow Alpha Chapter members. The fun turned into a tough competition when the guys battled against the girls. Although they gave it their best efforts, the girls fell short at the end and were forced to buy pizza for their guy rivals.

In the past, the Alpha Chapter has tried to reach some of the members of the younger community by spending some time at local elementary and middle schools. However, thanks to member Niven Tien (‘05), these visits are now more organized and more have been planned for the upcoming year. The first visit was on November 21and about twenty members went to six classes consisting of kindergarten through first grade at Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School. At this visit, members interacted with the children and taught them the proper way to brush and take care of their teeth. Tubes of toothpaste and toothbrushes were handed out to all the children that participated. This interaction allowed the kids to become more comfortable with the dentist and hopefully will instill in them a more positive outlook on dentistry.

Although the semester has been a great success, there was one event that was greatly missed. Due to the snowstorm, the annual holiday party at Dr. Daley’s house had to be cancelled. However, new and old members alike both are looking forward to this get-together next year!

Last but not least, the chapter was very pleased to receive the “Regional Founders Award for Chapter Excellence.” This award recognized our chapter as the best chapter in the region for its overall activities during the year and exceptional efforts toward the growth of the chapter. Congratulations goes out to Becky Pounds (‘04) and last year’s officers for all their hard work

Happy Hour at Camden Pub

Dedicated members Christine Ferrell, Eddie Wun, Suzie Rizzardi and Carla Guzman make it a late night stuffing candy grams and enjoying a pot luck dinner

Dr. Seibel must be a good cook to make all these members smile at his annual BBQ

From this picture, it looks like the girls may have taken an early lead during bowling night
