Marcia Hoover Kenward passed away peacefully Saturday night, July 26,
at the age of 77, after a long and valiant battle with ovarian cancer.
Born July
28, 1925, she was a resident of Miami for 51 years. A native of Kentland,
Indiana, she attended Indiana University, graduating magna cum laude
in 1947 with a major in journalism. During her college years she was
elected to a number of honorary societies, including Phi Beta Kappa,
Alpha Lambda Delta, Theta Sigma Phi (journalism) and Mortar Board. She
was a member of the student council, associate editor of the campus
newspaper and vice president of her senior class. She was vice president
and scholarship chairman of Chi Omega social sorority.
In 1948, she married Franklin Monroe Kenward, who survives, and the
couple resided in Gary, Indiana, while he completed his degree in dentistry
at Loyola University, Chicago. During this time, Marcia worked for The
Gary Post Tribune as assistant woman's news editor, fashion editor and
religious news editor.
The Kenwards moved to Miami in 1952 and two years later built a home
in Pinecrest. Their two sons grew up there and the older, Dr. Scott
F. Kenward, has a dental practice in Pinecrest and also lives in the
area with his wife, Dr. Debra Kenward and their two children, Andrew
and Catherine Ann. Christopher F. Kenward is an attorney and businessman
in Redwood City, California. Other survivors include a brother, Robert
T. Hoover (Anne) of Indianapolis, Indiana, nephew Dr. Michael Schatzlein
of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and a niece, Melinda MacAnally, of Indianapolis.
Marcia became active in community affairs, serving as president of the
Parent-Teacher Associations of both Pinecrest Elementary and Palmetto
Middle Schools. She was an elder in Pinecrest Presbyterian Church and
edited the church newsletter for several years. She also was a member
of the Guild of the Museum of Science, of Women in Communications, the
Chi Omega Alumna Association and the Miami Dental Auxiliary. She belonged
to Riviera Country Club and Beach Colony Club.
For fifteen years she edited the Frater, the national magazine of Psi
Omega Dental Fraternity. She accompanied her husband on his professional
business trips throughout the world and wrote many accounts of their
extensive travels. But most of all she loved being a wife, mother and
grandmother and the special times spent with her family.
Marcia suggested that contributions be made to the Ovarian Cancer Research
Fund, Inc. One Pennsylvania Plaza, Suite 4800, New York, NY 10019.
