Frater - Autumn 2004

Selections from the Frater Magazine published by the Psi Omega Fraternity

From the Central Office
...From Kathleen, Tom, and Jimmy

This year is sure going by quickly! It seems like we just wished our 2004 graduates a successful future and now we are entering into a new school year. We hope the new school year will be good to everyone!

There are really no major problems to report from the Central Office. As mentioned in the Spring issue, we had overall success in getting the senior certificates and awards to everyone in a timely manner. So...we will be operating on the same schedule this year - information will be sent to the Deputy Councilor of each chapter in December, giving us plenty of time to get the information back, so the certificates and awards can be ordered and shipped in a timely fashion.

There is one thing that we will mention and that is the student membership lists that are sent to each chapter for verification of senior names. There are usually a few senior names that crop up at the end of each school year, prior to graduation, that we do not have on record. The majority of the time, it is because we have not received the application on him/her. We ask everyone to please examine the list carefully and let us know immediately if our list differs. This will save a lot of time!

We encourage each chapter to send in your Deputy Councilor Report, Treasurer Report, and House Manager Report (if applicable) by April 15th and October 15th. It's also good to keep us up-to-date with the chapter officers. This way we have appropriate contacts for each chapter and we are able to keep the Frater up-to-date.

Dr. Kays and Dr. Rivers, along with Dr. Grosse, will be in Orlando, Florida, for the ADA Convention. There will not be a National Council Meeting since this was held in April; however, they encourage visitors, as they will be available on Friday and Saturday (October 1st and 2nd), in the Psi 0 Suite, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Stop by and say HELLO!

Your Central Office Staff…

A Memorial to Ian Raymond Burns

The students and faculty of the Medical University of South Carolina College of Dental Medicine suffered a tragic loss on January 6, 2004. Our friend and colleague, Ian Raymond

Burns, passed away four days after an accident at the Georgia Peach Bowl in Atlanta, as a result of injuries he sustained while supporting his Clemson football team. During his admittance at Grady Memorial Hospital in downtown Atlanta, his friends and family waited anxiously for news from the trauma team. On January 6, 2004, Ian's suffering ended and his soul was sent to rest with the Almighty.

In Charleston, South Carolina, the news of Ian's passing was felt deeply. All who had known him were left dismayed at the unfortunate news, and many sought comfort from one another. Ian's passing became a personal reminder of how precious life is, and at the same time we were made aware of its
fragility. What we will remember most about Ian is how he embraced life.

Ian gained acceptance to the Medical University of South Carolina College of Dental Medicine, Class of 2006, and had pledged to rush for Psi Omega Fraternity this past spring. Sigma Chi Chapter made Ian Burns an honorary member. He approached everything in life with a determination to be successful and to put all he had into his efforts. The perseverance he showed in school was an inspiration to all who knew him. Our friend was diligent in every assignment, selfless in his eagerness to help others, and friendly to all. The honorable manner in which he conducted himself and the high standard by which he lived exacted respect from his peers and professors alike.
Ian's resoluteness and will to succeed will surely inspire all of us who continue on our journey to becoming the best dentists we can be.

Ian's loss we will never forget, but one never loses a true friend, and if we abide by the same values he did, then surely our friend will never die.

Ian Raymond Burns
