Chapter Check-In

Zeta
University of Pennsylvania

The 2007-2008 school year has been one of the most fruitful for Penn Dental’s Psi Omega in years! We experienced an exceptionally large rush week with over eighty applicants out of the 116 students in the freshman class of 2011, thanks to our excellent Rush Chairs. After reading application essays, we accepted just over thirty new members! We celebrated our new recruits with a gourmet three-course dinner at the Fayette Street Grille just outside of Philadelphia, followed by an initiation ceremony led by our enthusiastic Faculty Advisor, Dr. Arthur Steinberg.

Our first event of the year, a Welcome Back party, was met with equal success as it was open to Penn Dental, Medical, Vet, and Ph.D students, with an approximate attendance of 250 people… all at the Psi O house! In addition to dancing and the usual festivities, Jeff Robinson, our Zeta chapter Treasurer, set up a fire pit with hundreds of hot dogs to roast for Penn’s hungry party animals!

More recently, we orchestrated a tutoring system where each second year student is assigned a lecture or two to teach to a group of first years the week before their exam. We recently had a large biochemistry tutoring session at the house, where we provided pizza for all members; the session lasted for seven hours and was a huge help to our first year members. One-on-one tutoring is also available to any members who need additional help in a particular subject.

In late November, we hosted a Wine & Cheese event at the Psi O house before Penn Dental’s winter formal, Odontoblast. Members came to the house dressed in formal attire to spend time together before heading out to Odontoblast. Then, on December 7th, we held our Holiday Party at the house with catered food, where members brought their families for dinner and festivities. The final event on our calendar for the season is our annual Frostbite Party where we invite the dental, medical, veterinary and Ph.D students to join us at the house for s’mores (cooked over our two fireplaces), hot cider and dancing! This was a great event last year, and we’re expecting just as much this time around!

Overall, it’s been an amazing fall semester for Zeta chapter, and a great transition to dental school for the freshman… we can’t wait to do it all again in the spring!
