Sigma Chi
Medical University
of South Carolina

Greetings from Charleston, South Carolina! First we would like to wish Happy Holidays to our fellow Psi O’s. Sigma Chi started off the summer with some great events and we had a very successful rush this year. We began by sponsoring two Post- Gross parties for the freshman (one jointly with Delta Sigma Delta and one sponsored solely by Psi Omega). Next came our Fishing Tournament that was a great success. Our main rush event was a freshman barbeque where interested students can come to meet upperclassmen and enjoy great barbeque and desserts. Shortly after the freshman barbeque, official rush week began where we sponsored breakfast one day and goodie bags another day. Our hard work paid off with 23 new members choosing to join Psi Omega! We are very excited to welcome our new members at our initiation ceremony that will be held in our historic campus chapel during the first week of January. Of course we will celebrate with food and beverages at Charleston Beerworks following the traditional initiation.

Following rush week we held our annual Casino Night on Friday October 12th. We had a wonderful crowd this year! We received an abundance of monetary and prize donations enabling us to have a very successful event as well as to donate to our philanthropy organizations (three local dental clinics).

This year we also held our first annual Christmas party! We wanted to find a special way to use our fraternity to help a local family in need at Christmas time. We worked together with an organization called Families helping Families. This organization accepts applications, selects needy families, and assigns families to groups like us who want to help. Using our Psi Omega members, we were able to sponsor a total of 12 family members! We held a Christmas party in Wadamalaw Island, SC with an Oyster roast, chili and chicken bog. Of course we also had skeet shooting, horseshoes, and a marshmallow roast. We brought the gifts to the party and wrapped them as a group to be sent to Families Helping Families. We also held a raffle where we raised $200 and were able to meet a “special needs request” of one of the families. We are very proud of our new event and how well we did!

Things are already set into motion to make 2008 a great year. In January we will have our induction ceremony. In February, several of our constituents will volunteer at the Special Smiles pavilion at the Special Olympics, teaching the importance of oral hygiene and proper technique. February is also Children’s Dental Health Month and many Sigma Chi’s will donate their time at local elementary schools and at Give Kids a Smile Day. In addition, many of our members continue to serve the community by volunteering at several “after hour” free dental clinics. Over the past year, Sigma Chi has collectively contributed many hours to the Charleston area and surrounding communities. We also have plans to continue our annual Psi Omega Beer Olympics this spring.

The passing of another year means we will have to say goodbye to our tremendous senior members. To show our gratitude for all their efforts, we will honor them with a Senior Banquet in the spring. We all wish them the best in their post-graduation endeavors.

On behalf of the entire Sigma Chi Chapter, we want to thank Dr. Albenesius, Dr. McGill, and Dr. Rivers for all of their kindness and support. We also want to thank the Executive Board for their dedication and hard work. We look forward to an event filled 2008!
