Gamma
Gamma Well, we have had a fun year so far at the Gamma Gamma chapter here at the University of Florida. This is a year of growth and rejuvenation locally as well as nationally. We have cheered on our defending National Champion Gators. However, even with our support they did not manage a repeat like our basketball team has done. On the upside, we do have the best darn quarterback in college football. Way to go Tebow! In the fall, we hosted TailGators for every home game at our prime location on University Avenue that was once again graciously shared with us by UFCD alum Dr. Larry Cook (President, ’80). Our largest turnout was for the much-anticipated SEC opener against the University of Tennessee when we had a live DJ and Sonny’s BBQ…Yummy! We held our annual Halloween party in conjunction with our local ASDA chapter at Jewell’s nightclub. It was SPOOKTACULAR! It was definitely the best social event that the UFCD had seen in a long time and will be a hurdle to top in the future. There was a costume contest that included: best overall costume, most creative, most bizarre, scariest, and sexiest. This year our subject for lunch and learns focused on a topic notoriously overlooked by our dental school; practice management and the “business side” of dentistry. In the fall, we had numerous speakers address the brotherhood to offer their insight into running a successful dental practice as well as ways we can prepare ourselves now to make us more financially prepared for the future. We will be continuing to host corporate sponsors that would like to address our brotherhood in the spring semester. This spring, we have a lot on our agenda. We will be making monthly trips to ACORN dental clinic to offer our members additional dental experiences outside of the school. Furthermore, this helps the community since the clinic offers services to the rural communities surrounding Gainesville. Additionally, the president feels that the chapter should have a yearly “philanthropy”. This year we are dedicating our interest to geriatric dentistry; this is a topic that will be a demanding issue in our careers as dentists and something that the curriculum here at UF has not exposed us to nearly enough. We intend to meet this goal by our brotherhood participating in lunch n’ learns from faculty and guest speakers that have particular interest and expertise in this area. We will implement service events to address the dental demands of the geriatric population in the Gainesville area by doing oral health screenings and instruction at local nursing home facilities. On the social side of things, the spring semester will begin with a Wine and Cheese induction ceremony. In March, we are planning our annual St. Patty’s Day party. We will join forces with our newly formed local HSDA chapter in May for our annual Cinco de Mayo party. All these parties will be interrupted with brief respites to unwind at our monthly happy hours, hopefully, with other graduate school organizations such as ones in business, medical, veterinary, and law. We are also interested in doing some inter- chapter events this semester and have been in contact with the Nu Sigma chapter at Nova Southeastern to sponsor a joint event. We will conclude our semester with by bidding a fond farewell to our great class of seniors and wish them the best in their careers as Gator dentists. As was said at the beginning, this has been an exciting year for Gamma Gamma to grow locally as well as nationally. Best of luck to you all in the remainder of the year! – Michael DeLucia, President (’09) |
