It is a great honor to be named Alumnus of the Year of Psi Omega. I have been involved with Alpha Chapter for over 30 years, since joining the faculty at the University of Maryland in 1975. When the Dental School changed the ruling regarding practice outside of school, I went into private practice, but remained involved with the chapter. We started with 12 men, but it grew to over 120 members and at that time the national organization made me Province Councilor. In that capacity, I watched over 6 states. Several years later, I was made President of Psi Omega. Alpha Chapter, with no strong faculty leadership drifted until Dr. Werner Siebel took over and the chapter was revitalized. It is currently the largest chapter in Psi O. I try to provide support for the students and Dr. Seibel whenever I can. The annual Christmas Party at my house started in 1982 when the previous year the students rented a hall. It had no decorations and did not seem very festive. Being a small group at the time, I offered my house for the following year and promised a tree and lots of decorations. Little did I know that one day I would have over 120 students at my home for the annual party and it would become a Psi Omega tradition. I encourage the students to visit my office and see what life is like after dental school. Many have accepted my offer and asked my advice about what to do after graduation. I used to feel like a big brother, but now I am more like a father figure. I love being a periodontist and looking forward to going to work everyday. Some people ask when I am going to retire, but I have no intention of even cutting back. I just spent over $500,000 to upgrade and enlarge my office to 9 chairs, and I have 3 other great periodontists working with me. So, practice has never been more fun. My career in dentistry has involved me in many aspects of the profession. I feel strongly that you need to give back to your professional community. I have served in many capacities on the local, regional, and national levels. But the joy I get from watching the young dentists grow and evolve has been the most rewarding Alumnus of the Year Nomination The Central Office is accepting nominations for Alumnus of the Year - if you have someone you would like to elect to receive this award, please submit this to the Central Office or e-mail us at psiomega@bellsouth.net. Include name, chapter, and graduation year. |
