Dental Mission trip in Equador, South America.

Sigma Chi
Medical University of South Carolina

Sigma Chi was proud to host the Psi Omega National Conclave meeting this past February 2009. There were 21 schools who participated in this spring’s event. On Friday night, we held a meet and greet pizza party to welcome everyone to beautiful downtown Charleston. This event was followed by experiencing the Charleston night life. On Saturday, we met and exchanged ideas about events and fundraisers. Each school presented a short presentation summarizing their chapter’s school year. On Saturday night, Psi Omega national office provided a wonderful BBQ dinner, catered by Sticky Finger’s, at the Courtyard Marriott overlooking the city marina. A special thanks to the National Office and everyone who made these events possible.

This spring has proven to be a busy semester for community service outreach. Many of our members participated in Give Kids a Smile® Day here at the dental school. We provided screening appointments and cleanings to many of the poverty stricken kids in the local community. We also volunteered with the Special Olympics distributing tooth brushes and teaching the athletes how to brush their teeth properly. In addition, many of our Sigma Chi members participated in a mission trip to Quito, Ecuador during our spring break in March. We spent a week offering a variety of services from extractions to cleanings and were able to see over 1,200 patients. The group also visited area schools teaching them how to brush their teeth. This past spring our community service chair, Adrienne, organized an oral cancer awareness week that included a bake sale and a cancer walk.

In March, we hosted a happy hour at California Dreaming which sits on the banks of the Ashley River. We treated our members and their spouses to fabulous food and drinks along with a great view of the Charleston sunset. This is a great way for everyone to get together, relax, and to have fun.

The last event of the year was our senior banquet held at the beach house of our own Psi Omega President Dr. Albenesius. Dr. McGill and Dr. Rivers cooked all day preparing a delicious BBQ dinner. Dr. Rivers once again provided some of his famous “Uncle Doc’s Special BBQ Sauce” which is always a crowd favorite! This event was a great time of fellowship and fun to be had by all. We finished the afternoon with an awards ceremony honoring all of our senior graduates and to those who have made this year special. It was a nice way to finish the spring semester, but we are sad to see our seniors go.

We have already started making plans for the Freshman welcome party and Post-Gross Anatomy events this summer. The Freshman welcome party is a great way to meet the new students while getting to mingle with Sigma Chi members. The Post-Goss Anatomy events provide outlets for us to fellowship with the freshmen and for them to unwind after a difficult exam. We are also looking forward to the annual Psi Omega fishing tournament in August. It’s a race to see who can land the biggest catch and the competition is always fierce.

We would like to thank all of our seniors and wish them the best of luck in their new endeavors. We would also like to say a special thanks to the dedication and loyalty of Dr. Albenesius, Dr. Rivers, Dr. McGill, and Dr. Alipati. We are proud of outreach to the community and hope to continue to develop new opportunities to serve them.
