Delta Upsilon Chapter
The University of Texas
Dental Branch at Houston

The Delta Upsilon Chapter of Psi Omega started the spring semester with a fabulous Initiation Party at El Pueblito. Alumni were present as 40 new members were welcomed in a celebration featuring quesadillas, margaritas, and dancing! Also in January was a Lunch and Learn to stress the importance of blood donation. Soon thereafter we participated in a blood drive held at the dental school in support of the Gulf Coast Regional Blood center.

In February, service was on our minds as we participated in Give Kids A Smile® Day. Nearly 200 children and mothers came to the dental school for free dental care. The event, held on Valentine’s Day, is an annual event co-sponsored by the UT Dental Branch, the Greater Houston Dental Society, and the Greater Houston Dental Alliance.

The following week, in honor of the memory of a dental student fatally shot in 2007, Psi O officers Holly Pavlick (’10), Amber Garcia (’10), Precious King (’10), and other members organized a fundraising walk called “Miles for Mina.” A fund was created in her name that will help pay for dental care for women and children who have been affected by domestic violence. The event raised more than $4200 for the fund and many members walked in honor of her memory and contributed to the fund.

Although February was a busy month, we also made time for a little fun and bowling at Palace Lanes. Just before a much needed Spring Break, we rented out and toured St. Arnold Brewery! We wore our green and had lots of festive beads and shamrocks; so it was a great way to celebrate St. Patty’s Day Psi O style. Of course, as accomplished connoisseurs, we were encouraged to sample all of the Houston-made beers during the event.

In April, members participated in the March of Dimes “March for Babies®,” a 5-mile walk held in April to support research so that all babies are born healthy and on time. Third-year Zarina Rasheed (’10) raised about $1,000 of the $1,500 school total on her own. Later in the month, we held another Lunch and Learn event where Psi O alumni Jared Abramian (’08, perio), Ron Hill (a past president of Psi- O, endo), and others gave us the inside “scoop” about specialist residencies. The beautiful Houston weather in the month of April allowed for a Happy Hour event held on the patio at the Beer Haus. The event gave everyone a chance to snack, relax, and enjoy the calm before the storm called finals!

On May 5th, we celebrated the end of another successful semester with “Cinco de Psi-O” at Azteca’s Bar and Grill. Members Brandon Braud (’12) and Evan Cettie (’12) kicked off the night’s entertainment with their band, and fun was had by all! We can’t wait for our annual Crawfish Boil on June 20th and look forward to another outstanding Rush Week in the fall. Congratulations and best wishes to our Senior Graduates and a heart-felt thanks to Dr. Stephen Jessee and those who made it such an amazing year!
