Fort Bragg Trip Abalone Diving

Beta Delta
University of San Francisco
California School of Dentistry

Aloha from the Beta Delta Chapter! Psi Omega has had an amazing year so far. We kicked off the winter quarter with our annual ski trip to Lake Tahoe and the spring quarter with a camping and abalone diving trip. The D2s were very active in our chapter this year and still found time to study for Boards part 1. This, however, did not stop us from having plenty of beer pong weeknight study breaks and Xbox Guitar Hero sessions at the house. Amidst the fun and studying, we continued to serve as a chapter at the homeless Community Dental Clinic (CDC), providing free dental care.

Psi Omega members continue to be prominent leaders representing our local UCSF student organizations at the local and national level. To name a few, this year alone the leading coordinator of CDC, the immediate-past president of ADEA, and the newly elected president of ASDA are all Psi Omega members. Student government and most other organizations on campus also have a strong representation of Psi Omega leaders.

This spring’s events proved to be quite successful as the weather turned to facilitate the local San Francisco events and local chapter events, which make our spring quarter so unique. We kicked off the quarter with a weekend camping trip to Fort Bragg. Other than a chance to explore the California Coast, and an excuse to enjoy each other’s company around a campfire, we venture north to Fort Bragg for the excellent Abalone diving. Abalone diving has become a favorite past time for many of our Beta Delta members, and has provided our camp trips and following gatherings with plenty of tasty snacks.

A new Battle of the Frats competition and BBQ was organized in the spring between the three dental fraternities at UCSF; Psi Omega, Delta Sigma Delta and Xi Psi Phi. Some of the events included tug of war, eating contest, boards trivia, and a relay race.

Next in the line-up came the infamous Bay to Breakers. As usual we start out the festivities at our fraternity house and congregate over to the starting line of the race. The race begins at 7 am sharp, with thousands of lively partygoers following the runners who have come out for this national marathon. We joined up with the masses, beer in hand, and looking excellent in our donned costumes. Bay to Breakers is notorious as being the one-day of the year when it is acceptable to carry open containers. On this eventful day, we walk shoulder to shoulder with the masses and pass people dressed as everything from a group of salmon traveling against the stream of people to individuals wearing nothing at all with cameras around their necks taking pictures of the reaction they cause to others.

One of the highest attendance parties we have at our fraternity house every year is our legendary Beer Relays. We gather up multiple teams per class, send out the call to alumni, and even invite teams from neighboring schools. We set up brackets and have a double round elimination tournament boat race style. We have 5 people per team and each team has a theme and comes in costume. The winning team is the one, which has each member of its team finish a full beer relay style before the other team. This party was extremely successful and found us fully through 5 kegs and on our way to the bars when we ran out of beer.

The end of the year would not be complete without our End of the World Party. The purpose of this party is to send our graduating seniors off with a final celebration to show our appreciation for their influence on our fraternity. This year’s theme was Disco and re-introduced bell-bottoms, tight silk shirts, and even roller skates.

We wish good luck to our graduation seniors, Erin Lobo, Aneel Nath, and Alice Goodwin who have been Psi O members since the beginning of their dental careers at UCSF. This summer is shaping up to be full of fun activities as we begin to plan for next year. An exciting rafting and camping trip is in the works for July.

The Psi Omega house is full to vivacious capacity. Improvements continue to be made. A Jacuzzi for the backyard patio is now under deliberation. As always, if you are in the area you are welcome to enjoy a stay with us.

As we look into the future we see a river-rafting trip along the American River accompanied by a few nights sleeping on the ground in sleeping bags. As we go through our week-to-week here at the Beta Delta Chapter we have found a happy social medium between lively parties and relaxing outdoor activities. Until the next time…
