Sigma Chi
Medical University of South Carolina

Sigma Chi kicked off the 2007 school year with our annual post-gross party on July 9th, a party Psi Omega sponsors for the freshmen following a gross anatomy exam. It’s a great way for the freshmen to unwind and let off steam after a difficult exam. Toucan Reef was once again the venue of choice, providing a picturesque view of the beautiful Charleston harbor while our freshmen colleagues enjoyed drinks and appetizers and mingled with Psi Omega members.

Fishing is a popular past time in Charleston, and Sigma Chi hosted the Psi Omega Fishing Tournament in August. It’s a race to see who can land the biggest catch and the competition was fierce with prizes given for the largest trout, flounder, sheepshead, bonnethead shark and blue crab. After the winners were determined, we followed the tournament up with a great after party at Salty Mike’s along the beautiful Ashley River.

In September, our Rush activity with the new freshmen class was an annual cook out Dr. Rivers, Lori, and Elizabeth Sigma Chi Students along the banks of the Stono River, which is always a big hit thanks to “Uncle Doc’s Special BBQ Sauce”, a specialty of Dr. Rivers.

Our most popular event of the year is undoubtedly Casino Night held at the Knights of Columbus Hall each fall. This semiformal event begins with appetizers and a cocktail hour before the gambling commences. Professional dealers man the Blackjack, Craps, and Texas Hold-‘Em tables during this fun-filled event. No gambling for money at these tables though. At the end of the night, chips are cashed in for raffle tickets that can be exchanged for some great prizes such as fishing gear, paintings, gift certificates and jewelry. We then round out the night with music and dancing.

The fall semester came to a close with a Christmas party and oyster roast on Wadmalaw Island in December. Steamed oysters were served along with Dr. McGill’s delicious pilau (chicken bog) and Dr. Rivers crowd pleasing barbeque. It was another great outdoor event including great food, skeet shooting, horseshoes, fishing and gift wrapping for the 3 families we adopted for the holidays through Families Helping Families. Fun was had by all, and it was a joy to ba able to provide Christmas gifts to these families in need!

The year 2008 began with the induction of twenty-three new members! The induction ceremony took place on January 9th in St. Luke’s Chapel located on the MUSC campus. We were excited about the addition of such a wonderful group of freshmen. To commemorate the occasion, we celebrated the event with an after party at Charleston Beerworks.

During the spring semester, Sigma Chi focuses mostly on community service. Some of our plans include working with Special Olym- 191908 Frater.indd 30 8/28/08 6:56:47 PM Frater Fall 2008 31 Jane and Andrienne Seniors with their awards. pics and Give Kids a Smile. In addition, we have many members who will be participating in mission trips and volunteering at the free dental clinics that we support financially. We think that 2007 was a great year for Sigma Chi and we have equally great plans for 2008.

As in the past, our members have been actively involved in philanthropic events throughout the semester. This year, the events included Special Olympics/Special Smiles in March, Give Kids a Smile day, and volunteering at local dental clinics. Additionally, many Psi Omega members participated in a mission trip to Ecuador during our spring break. We are excited to continue to “give back” to the community and are planning new and exciting ways to do that.

Our third annual Psi Olympics event held at James Island County Park at the end of March. It was a cool and windy day, but a warm fire, excellent food and games along with a DJ made for a fun event.

The last event of the year was our senior banquet held at the home of one of our seniors, Eddie Rodgers. It was a beautiful day which included barbecue and good fellowship prior to an awards ceremony. It was a nice way to honor our seniors and we are sad to see them go.

We have already started making plans for the Post-Gross Anatomy events, and are looking forward to the fishing tournament, and rush events. We always enjoy our freshman welcome party and especially Casino Night! We are proud to say that the proceeds from these events are given to free dental clinics in the Charleston area.

Sigma Chi is eager to start the upcoming 2008-2009 school year. We look forward to continuing our philanthropic work and giving back to the community this year. We are proud of our service and loyalty and are excited to see what we can accomplish this year. We would especially like to thank Dr. Albenesius, Dr. Rivers, and Dr. McGill for their dedication and excitement about Psi Omega. We are looking forward to another great year!
