Phi Rho Phi Rho University
of Missouri-Kansas City The semester kicked off with our annual stein party in which new members christened their steins with a backdrop of upperclassman showing them the way. This annual event always sets the tone for the semester and warms us up in chilly Kansas City. No sooner was our stein party in the books, did we throw one of the best Casino Nights in fraternity history. Complete with blackjack, roulette, and Texas Hold ‘em, both members and nonmembers alike tried their luck. Faculty and alumni volunteered their dealing skills to make it a winning night for all in attendance. Rolling into March, Phi Rho stepped it up and sponsored our first annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration. For those that don’t know, Kansas City has one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the country, and we couldn’t let our dental students down. Following up on a first from last year, Phi Rho also held a second annual school wide dodge ball tournament. Dental students competed against medical school and law school teams. When the dust settled, “the dentists” regained the championship trophy from the med school. The dodge ball tournament and casino night brought in funds for future service projects. The spring came to a close with our senior wine night at our faculty advisor’s downtown loft. Among our forty graduating seniors, several went on to specialize, and all found a fit for their dental future. We will truly miss this class as they brought a great deal of energy and commitment to the chapter. New officers were also elected and a strong group of third year dental students will be leading the future of Phi Rho into the fall of 2008. This summer our chapter plans to attend a Royal’s game and have a couple Happy Hours in the city’s new downtown Power and Light district. With a good group of active members, Phi Rho looks to expand upon our staple service commitments to the community. On top of our Ronald McDonald house meals and pop tab collections, we are looking at starting our own chapter fluoride varnish program for inner city youths. We will also be visiting next-door Children’s Mercy Hospital to establish a reading program for long-term care patients. As one can see, Phi Rho chapter is keeping busy with no plans of slowing down. The new members will be here in the fall and we look forward to sharing our memories with them. Peter
