The Baylor College of Dentistry

The 2008 spring session at Baylor has gone by at the speed of light. In January, Psi Omega hosted a welcome back party at a local establishment called the Elbow Room, informally nicknamed the “ER”, where students relaxed after a long week at the college. At this meeting, we chose the theme of our March 2008 Rush Party, “Pirates and Fairies”.

In March, Rush was on! Fifty-four students rushed the three fraternities: Psi Omega, Xi Psi Phi and Delta Sigma. This was one of the largest Rush turnouts in history at The Baylor College of Dentistry. Psi Omega had the first day of Rush Week. We started the morning off by making breakfast for the first year students: pancakes, bacon, muffins, coffee, juice, water, and free dental floss of course! The pancakes were homemade by our second year members. This breakfast lasted from 7am – 8am. The next event of the day was lunch. At lunch, the President, Sean Fitzgerald, made a presentation about Psi Omega and told all the first year students why he joined in 2006. Dr. Gary Coleman, Province Councilor, also spoke admirably about the fraternity. Lunch was served, people chatted and the event of the evening was announced! Later that night, we had our Pirates and Fairies party at a local Dallas hotspot.

Our college is unique in our rush system – the three fraternities evenly divide rushees, and all received eighteen new members this year. The greatest part of this year was Psi Omega received 14 first choices!

As the semester continued, seniors completed their mock boards, and after Spring Break, it was time to welcome our newest D1 members. The President, Province Counsilor/Faculty Advisor and other elected officials, warmly welcomed our newest members at a house party hosted by Sarah Parker and Lindsey Loveless. The President informed all of the newest members of their crucial role in the year ahead as officers of the fraternity. Many of the officer positions were discussed. This forum gave the new Psi O’s the chance to think about where they wanted to be next year in the fraternity.

In late April, the D1s were finishing their amazingly difficult year. The D2’s were completing their courses and requirements to finally enter the clinic in June and work on real folks. The D3s were busy finishing their rigorous clinical work and courses. Finally, our brave D4s took and successfully passed their Western Regional Examination Board (WREB). Congratulations to all of them! We certainly wish our newest graduates the best in their future travels and endeavors, as they enter the honored profession of dentistry.

As the semester wrapped and D4s prepared to graduate, we had an election party and a Senior Banquet. With our seniors graduating and each of the other classes moving on up, our fraternity chapter currently consists of 45 men and women from the D2, D3 and D4 classes. This includes all of the newest members that joined in March 2008.

In closing, the Delta Psi Chapter would like to thank all of you at the home office for your amazing support and putting together such a wonderful magazine. I certainly enjoy writing about our fraternity chapter in Dallas. I love reading about how the other Chapters are doing in other parts of the United States. We would like to send our warmest and best wishes to Dr. Gary Coleman, our Faculty Advisor and Province Councilor and his lovely wife. Their support and guidance has aided our chapter significantly over the years.

Cheers to all,
Sean Fitzgerald – President of The Delta Psi Chapter
