Post Gross Party
Holiday Party
Elementary School Visit
Senior Banquet |
Alpha This past spring semester at the University of Maryland was more eventful than previous years. The Alpha Chapter started the semester in full force with our annual Holiday Party on January 19th at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Tom Daley, alumnus and Alpha Chapter’s most ardent supporter. This event was enjoyed by about 40 members and significant others. In celebration of the end of the freshmen’s Gross Anatomy course, every year we host a Post Gross Anatomy Party. This year’s party was held at the 13th floor of the Belvedere, one of Baltimore’s oldest hotels. The festivities were enjoyed by not only the freshmen, but also sophomores, juniors, seniors and students of other graduate schools at the UMB campus. This event was organized by Andrew Pakchoian; many thanks to him for organizing a wonderful event that everyone enjoyed! As is the Alpha Chapter’s tradition, we had several elementary school visits to an Elementary School in West Baltimore organized by Julie Lokitis. Students from Pre-Kindergarten to the 3rd grade were taught about how caries form, foods they should and should not be eating and proper flossing and brushing technique. The students were given toothbrushes and activity sheets for their participation. These children have grown accustomed to our visits and are retaining what is being taught to them in these visits as is witnessed when we come back and see that they know how to properly maintain their teeth! Many thanks go out to the volunteers who participated and to Julie for organizing 4 successful school visits! As always, the senior banquet was a favorite. It was held at the Hunt Valley Country Club and featured custom pasta entrées made on the spot! Graduating seniors had a chance to give PHT (pushing him/her through) Awards to those that made getting through dental school possible for them. Also, Fraternal Scholastic Achievement awards were given to 2 students this year for their academic distinction: David Bonebreak and Lindsay Wessner; congratulations to them! We also presented Fraternal Achievement awards to Dave Bonebreak, past president. We thank him for his exemplary contributions to the chapter’s activities and for contributing to its development and progress. This Semester’s Habitat for Humanity outreach was on March 1st and was attended by 7 of our members. The beautiful weather and the eagerness our members showed made this event all the more special. Volunteers helped build a wall in one of the new homes, tear down old walls in HFH headquarters and organize equipment and shelves. It was a great success and we look forward to coming back next spring for another volunteer day. Post Gross Party 191908 Frater.indd 18 8/28/08 6:56:34 PM Frater Fall 2008 19 Alpha Chapter’s Andrew Pakchoian organized another bus trip to DC. About 20 students took a fully equipped party bus down to DC where it took them to 1223, a popular DC club. We held a similar event in the fall semester; attendees thought both events were a great success and we hope to continue holding them in the future! Many thanks for Andrew for making this possible. The month of April saw the Alpha Chapter Happy Hour for members and significant others at Pickle’s Pub. We had the greatest attendance of any happy hour hosted by the Alpha Chapter. It was attended by about 80 people and gave everyone a chance to relax from the stress of school and clinic. Dr. Seibel, our now retired Deputy Councilor, was another familiar face at this happy hour. As always, it was wonderful to see Dr. Seibel and the students had a chance to reconnect with him. This semester’s Specialty Night was held at Harbor View on April 30th and featured guest speakers in various fields who offered a glimpse into their specialties and also answered questions that students had. Dr. Byron Bonebreak, an Orthodontist spoke about his specialty, Dr. Tom Daley spoke about Periodontics and Pedodontics was covered by Dr. Ed Ginsberg. This event hosted by our past president, David Bonebreak. Many thanks to Dave for putting this event together and to our speakers for sharing their insights! This year ended with elections for next year’s officers. Vanessa Benavent passed on the torch to Andrew Pakchoian as president and vice presidents were elected for each class. We hope that the new officers will bring new and more exciting opportunities to serve our community and make our time in dental school all the more memorable. The outlook on the next year is bright with lots of new activities on the horizon. We wish the graduated seniors the best of luck in their chosen paths and hope to see them at our alumni events. Our Alpha chapter would also like to thank Dr. Byron Bonebreak, Deputy Councilor, and Dr. Christine Ferrell, Assistant Deputy Councilor and past chapter president, for all their support and dedication to our chapter in this past year. We look forward to working with them for many years to come and are looking forward to even further expanding our chapter and reaching out to the Baltimore community. Melody
