- The Alpha Chapter at the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery kicked off the Fall 2005 semester at a fast pace, and we haven't slowed down yet. In August, we greeted the very anxious new freshmen with conversation and friendly faces as they went into their first day of orientation. On August 24th, we again welcomed the freshmen and other non-members to our open house luncheon, where President Reya Weeks introduced the fraternity, allowing everyone to get to know Psi Omega. Pickles Pub, next to Camden Yards, was the site of our Rush Happy Hour, which was attended by over 120 people. Forty-six new members were inducted to the group, bringing our total membership to 139! Senior Phong Ta led a string duo at the induction, which was held at Davidge Hall, the oldest medical building still in use today in the United States. Our Deputy Councilor, Dr. Werner Seibel, graciously opened his home to us in September for our annual barbeque. Over thirty members attended the event, and spent the day relaxing with friends and eating delicious food. Thank you Dr. and Mrs. Seibel for your hospitality! Habitat for Humanity has become one of our favorite events since volunteering as a group for the first rime last year. Steve Kuzmak organized two outings this Fall. Volunteers spent the day insulating, cleaning, and painting a house in an underprivileged area of Baltimore City. Members come home dirty and tired, but have a sense of accomplishment for helping families in our community. Halloween for the Alpha Chapter means one thing: candy grams!!! Led by Jennifer Nguyen, members sold almost 500 candy grams, which were distributed throughout the school on Halloween. As always, half of the proceeds went to Quest for Care, an organization in the school that provides dental care for those who cannot afford it. This year we were able to donate $160 to charity. Social Chairs Dena Wrigley and John Mohler decided we had been working so hard all semester, we needed a Fall party. After much deliberation, it was decided that it would be a themed "color party". Each attendee had to dress from head to toe in a single color. On November 4th, over 100 monochrome dental students and friends converged at Mother’s Bar and Grille in Federal Hill. Prizes were given to the most creative outfits and everyone who attended had a good time. In December, over a dozen members visited Federal Hill Elementary School as part of our inner city youth education program, led by Eric Morse. This program helps educate children in underserved areas, in many aspects of dental care and health care in general. Over a hundred pre-Kindergarten and kindergarten children were given information on dental home care, nutrition, and visiting the dentist. Literature was sent home to parents, in hopes that they can help reinforce what was discussed. The children were very enthusiastic and enjoyed receiving the toothbrushes Psi Omega provides at every visit. In the end, the Psi Omega members learn from the children just as much as the children learn from them. Our annual holiday party was held once again at Dr. Daley's residence on January 7th. Over 50 members attended the celebration. In continuing the tradition, an excellent array of delicious cuisine was brought by the members to the party, while Dr. Daley provided a fantastic selection of wines, beers, and sodas. In addition to the wonderful spread, we all enjoyed shooting pool, playing ping-pong and 'foozball'. Fun was had by all, thank you Dr. and Mrs. Daley! The Alpha Chapter is looking forward to a Spring semester that is as fun and productive as the Fall. We are already planning our annual Post-Gross Party and more Habitat for Humanity events, among other things. We are lucky this year to be guided not only by Dr. Seibel, but also by our Assistant Deputy Councilor, Dr. Christine Ferrell, a 2005 BCDS graduate and past Psi Omega president. Dr. Ferrell is enrolled in the postgraduate orthodontics program, and we are lucky to still have her with us!!! Sarah Bowling ('06), Editor
