Sigma Greetings from the Sunshine State and all of us here at Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine Psi Omega Fraternity! We are excited about kicking off this school year with lots of activities, services, and fundraisers. We have a new board of officers with high expectations in making our fraternity better than ever. our President, Heidi Mason; Vice president, Michelle Mayer; Secretary, Ana Paula Ferraz; Treasurer, Joanne Nunes. Our chairman include: Lauren Triana and Scott Pincus, Social chairs; Derek Gatta, Andreina Izarra, and Ali Jadali, Rush chairs; Neda Bahmadi, Sara Daneshpajouh, Jonelle Crichton, and Jared Slovan, Academic Chairs. We combined our Senior Dinner with our new member initiation at local restaurant in April. Congratulations to our 13 departing seniors (we’ll miss you!) and welcome to all the new members. Our Fraternal Achievement AND Scholastic Achievement Awards both went to past president Talia Puma. We had 28 new members join us and we had a formal swearing in with the new members reciting the Fraternal Promise and the Obligation Oath. (see pictures) We are beginning this summer’s activities with our annual wine and cheese event at our Deputy Councilor Dr. Wendy Hupp’s house. Here, the new D1’s have a chance to meet upperclassmen and old members can catch up with one other after a busy summer in the clinic or studying for board exams. Fall semester events include happy hour events at the Davie Ale House and our explosive ninth annual Luau. Last year 225 people attended and this year we plan to top that number! One new event for us will be fundraising at the concession stands at Dolphin Stadium for Miami Dolphin’s football games. In addition, we are expanding the educational aspect of our fraternity by having more Lunch and Learn’s with local dentists sharing their vast experience and knowledge with us. Beach Days, a Halloween party, and a tailgate to a University of Florida football game in Gainesville are also in the works. Finally, a new twist to an old tradition, Bowling Night - Psi O “Veterans” vs. the “Fresh meat” D1s! So long for now as we begin the 2006-2007 school year with high hopes that Psi Omega will have an awesome year! Ana Paula Ferraz (‘08), Secretary

Gamma The Psi Gamma Chapter at the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry kicked off the fall 2005 with an exciting rush week for the new first year students. We hosted a cookout at the home of our faculty advisor, Dr. Barry Owens, where the new students were able to meet the upperclassmen and faculty. Dr. Owens sweated the night away over his grill, and the students were able to take advantage of his great grilling skills. As our main event for rush week we chartered buses to Tunica, Mississippi to the casinos. Everyone enjoyed an all-you-can-eat buffet and tried not to lose too much money at the slots and tables. The casino trip was a big hit with the new students and a good chance for everyone to relax and get away from the stresses of school. In October, we hosted a Halloween costume party with the dental hygiene students from UT. It was a fun night for everyone with a live band and some great costumes. We try to have a cocktail party at least once a month for the Psi O members and friends to relax and have a little fun. A popular spot that we have parties at is Celebrity’s on world famous Beale Street. Everyone comes out to enjoy live music, beer, and socializing. Many UT Psi O members also stay busy volunteering at Target House, a long term housing facility for St. Jude patients and their families. The ASDA chapter at UT arranges events for the kids like BBQs, movie nights, and an Easter egg hunt and many Psi O members volunteer to help out. In May, we had our second annual Psi O crawfish boil. The crawfish boil was a big hit last year, and this year was even bigger. Over four hundred pounds of crawfish were boiled and devoured by the students and faculty. We sold t-shirts for the party and donated the proceeds to a local charity. We had a great year and thank all of our members, faculty, and alumni for their support! Psi Gamma University of Tennessee

Chi The Sigma Chi Chapter, located in Charleston, SC, prides itself in being a well-rounded group. Every event and activity focuses on philanthropy, social aspects, and academics. We believe that our success in past events is accredited to our hard work in incorporating these “stepping stones” during every planning process. That being said, we are happy to report that 2006 is well on its way to being another great year. We started off the year in January by initiating 20 new members into chapter. Induction was held in St. Luke’s Chapel, a beautiful chapel located on MUSC’s campus, and a reception followed at Charleston Beerworks. As usual, many of our members participated in volunteer activities throughout the spring semester such as Special Olympics, Give Kids a Smile day, and local free dental clinics. We also had several members who participated in an annual spring break mission trip to Venezuela. As you can see, philanthropy is something we really pride ourselves on at MUSC. We truly feel that we are blessed with such great opportunities and giving back to others in our community is our way of saying thanks. On top of these great service projects, we plan on implementing a volunteer service program every month with local charities. Some of our ideas include cooking dinner for Ronald McDonald House, Habitat for Humanity, and Crisis Ministries. Sigma Chi has held some amazing events over the years. This year we decided to add yet another event to the list. The first annual “Psi Olympics” took place on April 23. Over 40 people participated in the first ever dental school field day. Some of our events included Tug-O-War, Sponge Relay, and an Obstacle Course. The event was a success and we hope that it will be even better this school year. We ended the 2005-2006 school year with our annual Senior Banquet, complete with fishing, skeet shooting, an award ceremony and lots of fun and food. This is a great day where we get to acknowledge our seniors for their hard work and accomplishments. This year, we hope to carry on with tradition with yearly post-gross parties for the freshmen, happy hours for everyone, the fishing tournament (which was postponed until August for prime fishing opportunities), our freshmen BBQ and our most successful and exciting event to date– Casino Night and Silent Auction. As usual, we plan on donating the money we receive from most of these events to our local charity, the free dental clinics here in Charleston. Sigma Chi is really excited about the upcoming 2006-2007 school year. As dental professionals, we hope that we can continue to impact MUSC and the local community with service and loyalty. On behalf of the entire Sigma Chi Chapter, we would like to thank Dr. Albenesius and every other Psi Omega faculty member for their hard work and dedication to this fraternity. We look forward to sharing this great year with everyone. Holly

The third and fourth years continued to work successfully in clinic while remaining an integral part of the fraternity. It is unfortunate that upperclassmen usually cease to be active in dental fraternities as their clinical responsibilities grow. Our upperclassmen, led by Jay Kansal ’07, continued to lead the fraternity. With all of this hard work it was only natural to have another party. Zeta Chapter threw a party to coincide with the “Spring Fling” party activities at the University of Pennsylvania. It was a huge success! As the semester drew to a close, we began to plan for initiation. Initiation dinner was held at the Marathon Grill and the ceremony was held on the grounds of the SDM in the Fonseca Gardens. Special thanks to Jay Kansal ’07, Hemant Dhawan ’07, Jonathan Ford ’07, and Dr. Steinberg for making this event happen. We have achieved many goals this year at Zeta. The house continues to be improved and the parking lot is organized (special thanks to Jeff Robinson, ’08). We have many more goals we want to accomplish such as including a community service project and renovating the dental laboratory. Elections were recently held. Thank you to all of those officers who have served in the past. Congratulations to our new officers: President, Jay Kansal ’07; Vice President, Dustin Snyder ’08’ Treasurer, Jeff Robinson ’08; Secretary, Ellie Baker ’07; Rush Chairs, Banafsheh Vahid ’08 and Dana Romano ’08. A final congratulations to the winners of our Psi Omega Graduation Awards, Natasha Bramley ’06 and Touraj Khalilzadeh ’06, and to the rest of the senior class! Thank you to Lucas Mantilla ’09 for providing the pictures for this article! Ellie
